The USF Art Gallery is proud to present Feelings are Involved, a solo exhibition by Sydney Vize. Working across sculpture, fiber, and book arts, Vize transforms the subtle moments of everyday life into sites of reflection and inquiry. Her work focuses on the tension between self-awareness and external observation, those fleeting instants when we feel watched, judged, or caught within our own expectations. By magnifying the small and seemingly mundane, Vize reveals how ordinary gestures and encounters can expose larger truths about social behavior, perception, and emotional experience.<\/p>

Each piece in Feelings are Involved invites viewers to slow down and recognize the quiet intensity embedded in familiar situations. Through thoughtful material choices and precise forms, Vize examines how scrutiny, whether self-imposed or imagined through the gaze of others-shapes our sense of identity and belonging. KUCHINSKI & STOIBER: Form & Fiber<\/strong>

This dynamic exhibition brings together the evocative ceramic and mixed media work of Marina Kuchinski and the intricate woven forms of Peg Stoiber in a dialogue of material, body, and narrative.<\/p>

Kuchinski\u2019s sculptures explore the intersections of animality, humanity, and objecthood\u2014inviting viewers to question boundaries between species, and social constructs. Her figurative forms, deeply rooted in posthumanist and feminist ecological thought, provoke reflection on empathy, transformation, and the shared vulnerability of living beings.<\/p>

In contrast, Stoiber\u2019s handwoven textiles celebrate the tactile beauty of fiber, informed by decades of exploration in color, pattern, and structure. Her work draws inspiration from natural forms and life\u2019s personal milestones, combining technical mastery with a curiosity about texture and dimensionality.<\/p>

Together, Form & Fiber invites us to see the poetic possibilities of material\u2014whether clay or thread\u2014and the complex human experiences they hold.

Javier Jasso: Clasicos Mexicanos<\/strong>

Javier Jasso is an artist originally from Chicago and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. He currently lives and works in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Known for being both a literal and metaphorical builder, Javier\u2019s work incorporates materials he collects from his local environment, such as metal, plaster, plastic, concrete, wood, and ceramic\u2014materials that connect to his roots in Guadalajara\u2019s ceramic tradition and Chicago\u2019s industrial legacy, particularly its brick factories from the early 1900s.<\/p>

In his exhibition Clasicos Mexicanos, Javier delves into the themes of space, place, and identity, challenging viewers\u2019 assumptions about what is foundational, protective, and stable in our global society. His work addresses the complexities of nomadism, selfhood, origin, home, and displacement, inviting reflection on the structures that shape our lives. High School Art Exhibition & Competition<\/strong>

Once again, USF celebrated the exceptional talent and creativity of local high school artists, showcasing over 300 works of art in the 2024-25 High School Art Exhibition & Competition. The exhibition featured a diverse array of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and digital art, offering a colorful and inspiring display of student expression and perspective. The open house reception on January 11, 2025 drew over 250 attendees, creating a vibrant atmosphere of support for the artists\u2014some who were awarded cash prizes. Additionally, Professors Paul Erschen and Chester Costello conducted portfolio reviews for aspiring art majors, offering valuable guidance and insight into pursuing a future in the arts at USF.

Jacob Watts: Socially Distanced\u200b

In the dynamic landscape of contemporary art, Jacob Watts stands out as a pioneering force, seamlessly merging the realms of photography, illustration, and sculpture. Based in Chicago, Watts\u2019s practice is a testament to the transformative power of image manipulation. His work, characterized by its blend of digital and physical manipulation, challenges the boundaries of traditional photography, pushing it into new territories of creative expression. Currently, Watts is exploring the intersection of photography and sculpture through his \u201cSocially Distanced\u201d series, where he delves into photo-based sculptures. This series exemplifies his ongoing experimentation and commitment to expanding the possibilities of visual art. Jacob Watts\u2019s work invites viewers to reconsider the limits of image-making, o\u2000ering a fresh perspective on how photography can interact with other artistic forms. This exhibit highlights work selected from the thesis projects of graduating seniors majoring in Studio Art, Photography, and Art Education. The exhibition serves as a culmination of their undergraduate experience, celebrating their growth as artists and their commitment to the rigorous process of artistic production. The Senior Thesis exhibition is a testament to the dedication and creativity of the graduating seniors, who have demonstrated their ability to contribute meaningfully to the discourse of contemporary art. Kelly Reaves: Pushing a Slug up a Mudslide

<\/b>Kelly Reaves is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Chicago. She received her BFA in studio art from SAIC in 2007, and a M.A. in Arts Journalism from SAIC in 2010. Pushing a Slug up a Mudslide offers viewers an immersive experience where Kelly’s fascination with the natural world and her perpetual inner dialogue intersect. Through the meditation-driven, intuitive creation of her work, Kelly seeks to attain mental clarity while stimulating the audience’s own explorations of self-reflection. Reaves adeptly simulates and warps the perception of three-dimensional space within the two-dimensional pieces, confounding traditional notions of depth. This intentional disruption compels viewers to examine their own perspective and prompts a deeper exploration of the work’s enigmatic qualities.<\/p>

Paul Erschen: Leach Field\u00a0

<\/span>Born in 1975, in Aurora, Ill., Paul Erschen lives and works in Chicago, Ill. Erschen earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing from Northern Illinois University (1998) and an MFA in Painting & Drawing from The Ohio State University (2000). Paul has taught in the Art & Design Department at USF since 2001 and is currently a Professor of Visual Art and Art & Design Department Chair. For \u201cLeach Field,\u201d Erschen presents a solo exhibition of painting, sculpture, and prints informed by midwestern post-industrial and agricultural environments.<\/span><\/p>

Heather Cox: Unleashed Play
<\/strong>Heather Cox considers herself part of the lineage of nontraditional printmakers using visual language of print and an emphasis on surface as a starting point for exploration and play. Cox combines printed paper, fabric, and string, sometimes fusing the materials together with encaustic wax. Installation is also a way to get the viewer involved. She wants guests to feel comfortable walking under and around the piece, noticing where shadows emerge, or gaze through a ripped surface to see what is hidden behind it. Her intention is for the viewer to be present with the work and comfortable getting close and questioning what they see with a kind of na\u00efve curiosity that parallels her own carefree approach to making with automatic drawings and vibrant hues.<\/p>

Contemplations and Ruminations: What Will People Think? by artist-photographer, Carol Thorner.<\/strong>\u201cContemplations and Ruminations: What Will People Think?\u201d is a culmination of years of self-introspection and the desire to question societal norms. Thorner uses her own painful experiences of not fitting in to address difficult topics such as identity, self-acceptance and relationships.<\/p>

FROM A WHIRLWIND<\/strong>, an immersive installation by artist, Sherri Denault. Denault creates patterns and textures that often resemble something found in nature – the flow of a stream or the wind rustling through leaves. Gallery visitors will be greeted with embellishments of thread, stitching and knots that becomes an immersive sensory experience for the viewer allowing them to question what lies just below the surface of perception.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Reverse Scheimpflug & Private Musings\u200b<\/strong><\/p>

USF Art Gallery is pleased to welcome John P. Spomar III: Reverse Scheimpflug & Private Musings<\/em><\/strong>. Spomar was formally trained in the photographic fine arts, but real life experiences shaped this body of work. Spomar\u2019s work, a collection of alternative process photographs, is a collection of images created as an outlet for his creative mind and used to explore the many facets and nuances of the photographic processes available. Spomar holds both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in photography from Governors State University.<\/p>

The Chicago Portrait Project at the University Of St Francis Art Gallery<\/strong><\/p>

The exhibition is on display August 23 \u2013 October 5, 2021 at the University of St. Francis Art Gallery located at 25 E. Van Buren St., Joliet.<\/p>

The Chicago Portrait Project is a collection of artist, Chester Alamo-Costello\u2019s work. The exhibition stems from Alamo-Costello’s 2018 book, “Somewhere In-Between Chicago”. The exhibition is a collection of portraits of artists, musicians, and casual passerby contrasted with imagery made in city streets and fringe environments since the mid-1990s. These works offer insight into the city as a creative environment and the various of socio-political issues encountered over the past 30+ years.<\/p>

There will be over 200+ artworks: photography, paintings, 3-dimensional works, journals, literature, and videos, in a range of media, documentary to experimental.<\/p>

The Chicago Portrait Project is supported by an Illinois Arts Council grant. These funds were used to produce the exhibition and employ USF students, Austin Hines and Odessa Villarreal.<\/em><\/p>

ABOUT THE ARTIST
<\/strong>Chester Alamo-Costello is an American artist, educator, publisher and writer based in Chicago, Illinois. He is most known for his long-running, international “Art Drop” series (1998\u2013), which place art into non-traditional settings, such as public parks, and for his photographic books, whose work has been noted for its rawness and everyday immediacy. He has primarily shown his work in the public domain in countries throughout Europe, the United States and Canada; he has also had exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Hyde Park Art Center. His photography and projects have been reviewed or published in the Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>,\u00a0Chicago Tribune<\/em>\u00a0Magazine,\u00a0De Telegraaf<\/em>\u00a0(Amsterdam),The Globe and Mail<\/em>\u00a0(Canada),\u00a0New Art Examiner<\/em>, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\u00a0Magazine,\u00a0Nerve<\/em>,\u00a0and on Chicago Public Radio.\u00a0Alamo-Costello’s books of photography, art and writing include:\u00a0Somewhere In-Between Chicago<\/em>\u00a0(2018),\u00a0The Globe<\/em>\u00a0(2010),\u00a0and\u00a0Grandpa Danny<\/em>\u00a0(2008).\u00a0Alamo-Costello is also the publisher of, and a contributor to,\u00a0The COMP Magazine<\/em>, a digital art and design journal. He is a professor and former chair of the Department of Art and Design at the\u00a0University of St. Francis\u00a0in Joliet, Illinois.<\/p>

Senior Thesis Exhibition 2021<\/strong><\/p>

2021 Senior Thesis Exhibition features the work of 6 graduating seniors from the Department of Fine Arts at the University of St. Francis. Working across a variety of media, these artists explore themes unique to each of them. As the culmination of their journey at the University of St. Francis, this exhibit not only reflects the skills gained from their time as a student but also their personal growth as artists.<\/p>

The exhibition is on display April 30 \u2013 July 30, 2021 at the University of St. Francis Art Gallery located at 25 E. Van Buren St., Joliet. Public reception is on Friday, April 30, 2021, 6-8pm.<\/p>
