Each student, and\u2014if you\u2019re a dependent\u2014one of your parents, will need an FSA account (also known as an FSA ID) to complete the FAFSA process on <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">studentaid.gov<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/fsa-id\/create-account\"><strong>Create an FSA Account: <\/strong><\/a><\/span>Create your account early\u2014even before you\u2019re ready to complete the FAFSA\u2014to avoid delays in the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your parents <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>SHOULD NOT<\/strong><\/span> create an FSA account for you or vice versa. Write it down (and memorize it\u2014it comes up a lot).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are not a U.S. citizen but meet Federal Student Aid\u2019s other\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/eligibility\/requirements\">eligibility criteria<\/a><\/span>, you\u2019ll also need your Alien Registration number. You and your parents need this information for the FAFSA form.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a Social Security number you will need this as part of your ID. For example, for the 2025-26 academic year, you&#8217;ll use 2024 tax info.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Since you\u2019ll almost certainly already have filed your taxes by the time the FAFSA form is open, you may be eligible to import your tax information into the FAFSA form right away using the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/what-is-irs-drt\">IRS Data Retrieval Tool<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(DRT).<\/li>\n<li>Not everyone is eligible to use the IRS DRT; and the IRS DRT does not input all the financial information required on the FAFSA form. This means you really should have your prior tax return and IRS W-2 available for reference.<\/li>\n<li>The IRS DRT is the fastest, most accurate way to input your tax return information into the FAFSA form.<\/li>\n<li>If you and your family experienced a reduction in income in the past year, go ahead and complete the FAFSA form with 2020 information, and then contact <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/stfrancis.edu\/admissions-aid\/financial-aid-services\/\">USF\u2019s Financial Aid office<\/a> <\/span>(phone: <a href=\"tel:8157403403\">815-740-3403<\/a>) to explain and document the change in income. Records of Your Assets (Money)<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1896\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"6\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1896\"><p>This section includes savings and checking account balances, as well as the value of investments such as stocks, bonds, and real estate excluding your primary residence. Report the current amounts as of the date you sign the FAFSA form, rather than reporting the 2024 tax year amounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Misreporting the value of investments is a\u00a0common FAFSA mistake. Please carefully review what is and is not considered a\u00a0student investment\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/fafsa4caster-question-net-worth-of-parents-investments\">parent investment<\/a>\u00a0to make sure you don\u2019t over- or under-report.
